Felce & Guy Partnership were commissioned by East Sussex County Council to provide full architectural services for a three classroom extension to replace existing mobile classrooms.
The extension was to be placed on a low laying grassed area, flanked by housing. The building plan collects the classrooms around a central group teaching area and creates an internal courtyard between the extension and the existing school hall. The new extension incorporates underfloor heating and a building section to utilise stack effect ventilation to the main teaching spaces.
Each classroom has a main teaching, and “wet” activities area with access to external teaching areas. The electrical and data services to each classroom is designed to be fully accessible for future extension or alteration, and each class features an interactive whiteboard.
In addition to the extension works, the commission included a programme of asbestos removal and replacement of existing windows to the school hall.
