Rustington Primary School

This project involved the replacement of temporary accommodation with permanent, to enable the school to operate as 2 forms of entry (420 pupils - 14 class base) and addressed the suitability of the ICT and library area.

The project comprises five new KS 2 classrooms and pupil toilets with a central corridor giving direct access to the playing field. It is linked to the adjacent teaching wing with a new corridor, which allowed the existing undersized classrooms to be enlarged into an existing corridor.

Good quality, low maintenance materials were used including facing brickwork, powder coated aluminium windows and larch cladding. The design, material selection and specification address the acoustic requirements for both internal and external acoustic separation and the provision of preferred reverberation times.

The design adopts a number of sustainability principles, the natural lighting, cross ventilation mentioned above along with high performance condensing boilers, under floor heating and localised hot water services plant.  Mechanical ventilation is restricted to toilet areas and the ICT suite.  Where practical, materials have been selected from sustainable sources.

Internal alterations comprise the conversion of a classroom to an ICT suite, which enables the existing library to be enlarged. The existing resources room / second large space has been converted into a staffroom. The existing staffroom has been converted into a KS1 classroom, thus enabling all the KS1 classrooms to be paired.
