This site, against the castle wall, in the historic town of Lewes in East Sussex presents some interesting challenges.
The brief was to design four new town houses, with two being contained within an existing derelict, listed building. Close consultation was required with the local Planning authority as well as specialist archaeological and planning consultants to agree a scheme that was suitable for the site.
The conversion scheme attempts to retain as much of the character of the original building as possible using existing openings and roof forms, whilst the new buildings are more contemporary in design but use traditional materials in recognition of the site.
